Drug and Alcohol Rehab
Program
There are many
different drug and alcohol rehab programs. Generally, different
programs are recommended based on the severity of the drug
abuse by the patient. For example, if the patient has a severe
level of drug addiction, inpatient care for at least 3 months
time would be recommended. However, if the level is less
severe, it may be that outpatient care is appropriate for a
shorter time interval. However, regardless of the program
recommended. Almost everyone will begin with a basic detox
program.
Any detox program will key on taking the person away
from drugs and alcohol and force them to deal with the initial
withdrawal systems. During this time, people can experience a
number of side effects including vomiting and nausea. Most
programs key on providing nutrition and supervision to help
build back up the body. It is not uncommon to see physical
exercise and sauna treatments used in this stage which are
designed to help the body get rid of drug and alcohol residues
in the body. Some programs will offer this detox program
on-site and others will do it at another medical facility. The
length of time for detox usually does not last more than a few
weeks and is far shorter for some. However, the key here is to
separate the person from the drugs and alcohol for a period of
time so the person can really get value out of a drug treatment
program.
After the detox program is complete, the patient will
move to a more general drug treatment program. These can
vary significantly from one treatment center to another;
however, most gear towards teaching and learning exercises
centered around addressing the underlying issues of their drug
use. Often, patients are asked to discuss their feelings,
review what factors helped lead them to drug use, and how best
to avoid these in the future. Some drug and alcohol rehab
programs will also have classes to help re-teach or teach
learning skills to help with memory and thinking. The aim
here is to develop new skills in each person and give them some
self-confidence. This may even include courses and
counseling sessions on developing self esteem and building up a
strong sense of what is right and wrong. After this area
is completed, many programs will graduate students from the
program and have some form of a follow-up
program.
A follow-up program will normally be individually
tailored to the student’s specific needs in offering him/her
extra support. This usually takes the form of additional
sessions or course work. This aspect of the program is geared
towards making sure the patient isn’t following back into prior
bad habits and can also be used to help offer future
suggestions and steps to take to further their positive
recovery.
By considering these steps, you should have a better
understanding of what you can expect to find in a drug and alcohol rehab
program.
