counseling available for those trying to get rid of this problem. Each program will be slightly different;
however, one can reasonably expect that the counseling program will go through a number of different stages in
order to help them cope with or cure their addiction.
Substance Abuse Counseling Stages
First and foremost, a substance abuse counseling
program is concerned with the mental health and stability of the patients. Normally, the first step of a
counseling program is to help a person realize what they can do to resist their urges to use. This may
include things like advising them to stay away from places that make a person want to use or even discourage them
from keeping contact with friends who are bad influences. They also drive home the point that it's easy to be
able to stop using something while attending counseling, but after the program is over, people will have to avoid
and deal with these issues on their own. The goal of the program is to
arm themselves with the right tools so they can do this effectively and consistently.
Another stage in a substance abuse counseling program
is to continue to build on the things that were done in the earlier stage. Here, people will be relearning
how to get their lives in order. They will be trying to
figure out coping mechanisms to help them avoid abusing the substance or substances and how to add positive
things to their lives to replace the now vacant drug use. After a person has
completed this stage, he or she is almost ready to start their life as an outpatient. However, an
evaluation is conducted to ensure the patient is ready for that stage in the process.
The last stage in a substance abuse
counseling program is there to help launch a person back into his or her life armed with all the ideas and
knowledge to help avoid bad situations and cope with the immediate issues that normally led to drug abuse in the
past. To do this a general plan will be developed with the patient and
the patient will go through an evaluation, and eventually be released. From here, the patient will normally
continue going to the services of a counseling program by using support groups for followup and to ensure they are
keeping true to their plan.
